d'eux, plus bruyamment. Pourtant, le pasteur Chun Ki-Won n'a jamais cessé.
Cesser de sauver des vies. Celles de Nord-Coréens assez courageux ou
fous pour fuir la dictature de la lignée des Kim Jong. Ce jour-là,
le révérend est assis sur un canapé, dans les locaux de
son église, à Séoul. Les coupures de presse encadrées
qui habillent les murs de la pièce, témoignent de sa foi et de
son obstination. color="navy">

color="navy">He had his moment of glory in the media. Then, visibility and
notoriety lessened. Other groups made themselves known and took over, with a
lot more noise. Yet, Pastor Chun Ki-Won never stopped. He never quit saving
lives. Lives of North Koreans insanely brave enough to escape the dictatorship
of the Kim Jong lineage. Today, the Pastor is sitting on a couch in the offices
of his Church in Seoul. Framed clippings that adorn the walls of the room testify
to his faith and persistence.

plastic bag that he preciously keeps within eyesight on a corner of his already
cluttered desk. It holds the truth, the truth of is happening on the other side
of the border, the North Korean neighbour, where madness has long ago overtaken
a socialist ideology that supposedly wants nothing more but the good of the
people.

; l'autre, la musique. L'un de couleur jaune symbolise l'été,
l'autre avec une cabane sous la neige et sur fond vert, représente l'hiver.
Les livres lui ont été donnés par un élève

color="navy">But what does this grey bag contain? Are they treasures from another
time? No, Durihana Ministry’s Pastor Chun Ki-Won is emphatic. lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="blue"> “These are still being distributed in schools today.” lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="navy"> They are school books. One teaches mathematics; the other, music.
One with a yellow cover symbolizes summer, the other portraying a cabin covered
with snow and a green background represents winter. These books were given to
him by a primary school student a few years ago, and today they would still
prove to be pertinent and in use.

et division. Mais en Corée du Nord, on se fiche un peu des nombres, on
préfère les symboles. Tant de soldats américains tués
soustraits, divisés ou additionnés aux morts nord-Coréens.
L'important, c'est de marteler qu'un Américain mort relève de
la bonne réponse. Pour la musique, c'est un peu le même refrain.
On voit une charmante fillette entonner une chanson avec des paroles qui en
disent long. color="silver">“Allons tuer les Japonais ou encore que l'Amérique aille
se faire voir.” color="blue">

color="navy">The Maths resembles ours: Calculus, multiplication and division.
But in North Korea, symbols are preferred to numbers. How many American soldiers
were killed and subtracted, divided or added to the North Korean dead. What
matters is putting emphasis on a dead American, and that would be the correct
answer. As for music, it's a bit of the same refrain. A lovely girl is singing
a song with words that speak volumes. color="blue">“Let's go kill the Japanese or let America go and take a long
hike off a short pier.”

effarée que lorsqu'il les a eus en main, la toute première fois.
Ils sont la preuve vivante de la lutte, du combat qu'il mène depuis les
années 1990 contre le régime de Pyongyang. Il a aidé plus
d'un millier de fugitifs. Ensemble, ils ont souvent traversé la Chine,
le Laos, la Mongolie ou la Thaïlande. Le combat de toute une vie. Seul.
Même sa famille, ses enfants, se moquent du destin des Nords-Coréens.

color="navy">Pastor Chun Ki-Won scrutinises these two alarming works, with
the same frightened sadness when he had them in hand for the very first time.
They are living proof of the struggle and the fight he’s been waging since
the 1990s against the Pyongyang regime. He has helped more than a thousand fugitives.
Together, they oftentimes crossed China, Laos, Mongolia or Thailand. It’s been
the fight of a lifetime undertaken alone at that. Even his family and his children
could not care less of the fate of North-Koreans. style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="blue">“Who will take over when I can no longer do it,” lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="navy"> he murmurs. Pastor Chun Ki-Won puts these treasures of hated
propaganda in their proper place in this precious bag. He knows that he will
show them again and again. To him they are the truth of an implacable dictatorship
birthed from insanity and cruelty. It must be fought until the last breath,
even his very own.

Jamais le sort des voisins nord-Coréens n'est évoqué dans

niveau de Juche Tower, on apercevait la frontière nord-coréenne.

color="navy">Nothing ever predestined Pastor Chun Ki-Won to such a destiny.
He was born in south-eastern South Korea, in a small village which had no water
or electricity when he was a child. The fate of North Korean neighbours was
never brought up in the household which he describes as being middle-class. lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="blue"> “I grew up with the idea that our neighbours were not humans
but creatures of hell.” color="navy">The early beginnings of his professional life when he leaves his
parents’ home are those of a small and ordinary businessman who tries to do
business in China. color="blue"> “I went to Hunchun in the northern part of the country, intending
to open a small hotel. I rented a car with a driver, and then on the way I realized
that at Juche Tower we could see the North Korean border, so I went down the
hill to take a picture.”

sera tourné et il s'intitulera The Frozen Lady, en mémoire de

color="navy">Then he trips on a pair of shoes. How odd. They appeared attached
to something. In reality, this color="blue">“something” color="navy"> was a woman's body! "The body was rigid and no one cared,
the driver told me that she was probably from North Korea, and there were a

Il m'a répondu : 'Ce n'est pas illégal de kidnapper des Nord-Coréennes

color="navy">they were South Koreans. He threw a few coins to them. But out
of nowhere Chinese policemen emerged, hitting them with sticks. A little girl
got heavily injured on the ear. Chun then discovers the meaning of lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="blue">“kotjebi” color="navy"> (the orphans of North Korea). At the same time in the marketplace,
a woman was screaming that she is being kidnapped by guys darting out of nowhere. lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="blue"> “Again, I quizzed my driver and he replied, 'It is not illegal
to kidnap North Koreans in China because they are without papers.'”

home, converted to Christianity, became Pastor Chun and founded the Durihana
Church. From this point forward, when he returns to the Middle Kingdom, it is

faire. Alors, je suis allé en Chine, j'ai acheté une carte, trouvé
une route via le Cambodge et le Vietnam. J'ai réussi et quand je l'ai
expliqué aux autorités de mon pays, ils m'ont accusé de
mentir. 'Impossible, ont-ils dit, la route entre la Chine et le Vietnam est
truffé de policiers et de cobras. Celle entre le Vietnam et le Cambodge
de mines.'” color="silver"> Pour la plupart des gens, cette fuite réussie relevait

no idea of how to do it, so I went to China, bought a map and found a way through
Cambodia and Vietnam. After I succeeded at it, I explained it to the authorities
in my country and they accused me of lying. style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="blue">“Impossible, they said, the road between China and Vietnam is
riddled with police and cobras. Then between Vietnam and Cambodia there are
countless mines.'” color="navy"> For most people, this successful escape was lucky, but for him,
it was the confirmation of a sign from God. style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="blue">“Later on, I guided twenty North Koreans through the Mongolian
desert. It had become my number one priority.”

A une époque encore récente, cela correspondait à quelques

color="blue">“It's true that in the past two or three years, the number of
people fleeing from North Korea has seemed to decline,” style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="navy"> says the Pastor, but since the start of 2019, the number is rising
again. This change is linked to Kim Jong-un and the fact that people are increasingly
aware of what is happening outside of their borders.” There are approximately
32,000 defectors or more from North Korea. Up until recently, this was equivalent
to around 2,000 arrivals per year. But this is indeed no longer the case.

chiffre est en baisse. Les femmes constituent à 80% le groupe de Nord-Coréens
qui fuient désormais le pays. Malheureusement, elles échouent
souvent en Chine où des passeurs leurs promettent des mariages fantastiques
avec des citoyens chinois. En réalité, elles se retrouvent souvent
dans le fin fond du pays, sans papier, souvent séparées de leurs
enfants et dans l'impossibilité absolue de se défendre et et encore
moins de s'enfuir à nouveau.” color="blue">

color="navy">Ji-yoon Lee, coordinator at the Alliance for Northern Korean Human
Rights, confirms it: color="blue">“The figure is down. Women consist of 80% of North Koreans currently
fleeing the country. Unfortunately, they often fail once in China where smugglers
promise them fairytale marriages with Chinese citizens. In reality, they are
more likely to be found in the far end of the country, without papers of identification,
oftentimes separated from their children and in absolute impossibility of defending
themselves, even less to flee again from an abusive situation.”

color="navy">Pastor Chun's mission has evolved. He is no longer the one crossing
borders accompanying fugitives and guiding them towards freedom. lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="blue"> “I use brokers who negotiate prices with smugglers. It's become
a business in the true sense. At one time you could even help people directly
from within North Korea, now everything goes through China.” lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="navy"> At present, fugitives settle right there quite often. Sometimes
they are restricted, as women are." Chinese society has also changed quite

Nords-Coréens, en Corée du Sud. Elle accueille une soixantaine
d'enfants (8 à 18 ans) que les équipes volontaristes du pasteur
se chargent d'éduquer, soigner et d'abriter. La mission se compose de
trois corps de bâtiment. L'un d'entre eux, situé à quelques
encablures de l'église et des bureaux, a été transformé
en habitation. On compte huit lits superposés. Ce jour-là, Esther
Park, une jeune Canado-Coréenne, tente de convaincre les adolescentes

color="navy">Naturally the purpose of the mission has also changed. Currently,
Durihana Ministry deals with the integration of North Koreans in South Korea.
It houses approximately sixty children (8 to 18 years) that the Pastor's volunteer
teams are responsible for in the ways of educating, caring and sheltering. The
mission consists of three building bodies. One of them, located close to the
Church and offices, has been transformed into housing. There are eight bunk
beds. Today, Esther Park, a young Canadian-Korean, is trying to convince teenage
girls who have locked themselves in their room to open the door.

aged 16, a little heavy set and very upset at having to let go of her console,
showed her face. We learned that the very upset young lady is enraged, because
she was let go of by her mother who was forced to choose between her and a husband,
once having arrived in China.

behind, because of being in the way of a new life in China, which qualifies

her.”

ont du mal à s'adapter. Tout est difficile. Et les Sud-Coréens
ne les accueillent plus autant avec enthousiasme. Et lui le pasteur Chun, croit-il
encore en sa mission? Il sursaute. color="silver">“Oui! Quand j'étais jeune, j'étais naïf,
c'est sûr. Maintenant, j'ai une meilleure idée de ce que veut dire
tout ça mais j'ai l'intime conviction d'être encore dans le vrai,
le juste. J'ai été appelé par Dieu pour cette mission.” lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="silver"> A 63 ans, celui qui a la coquetterie de mettre ses lunettes
le moins souvent possible, se ronge pourtant les sangs. En août prochain,
le propriétaire des lieux les met dehors, dans le cadre de la gentrification
du quartier. Il a moins de deux mois pour trouver de nouveaux locaux sinon les
enfants qu'ils accueillent, seront une nouvelle fois abandonnés. lang="EN-US" style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="navy">

color="navy">Shattered destinies, broken and crumbling lives, these children
have great trouble adjusting. Everything is difficult. And today South Koreans
don’t welcome them as enthusiastically as before. And what about Pastor Chun,
does he still believe in his mission? He’s startled. style="mso-fareast-font-family:함초롬바탕;mso-font-width:100%;letter-spacing:0pt;mso-text-raise:0pt;"> color="blue">“Yes, when I was young, I was naive, it’s a given. Now I have
a better idea of what all that means and entails. But I hold firmly to the deep
conviction that I'm still in the right, the Truth, that I was indeed called
by God for this one-of-a-kind mission.” color="navy"> At age 63, Pastor Chun who prefers not to put on his glasses
except as little as possible still feels raw at the core. Next August 2019,
the owner of the buildings that houses this ministry will throw them out on
the pavement, as part of the gentrification remodelling of the neighbourhood.
He’s got less than two months to find new premises against the possibility
that the children, who are welcomed there for the time being, might be abandoned,
once more.
